Tarot Cards Reading

Tarot cards have fascinated humanity for centuries. Contrary to popular belief, they are not about fortune telling. Tarot is a mirror for your subconscious, a tool for self-reflection, and a way to access your innate intuition. And anyone can learn to read them.

What Is Tarot?

Tarot is a deck of 78 cards used for divination, meditation, and self-reflection. Each card carries symbolic meaning that, when interpreted, provides insight into a question or situation.

The deck is divided into two parts:

Major Arcana (22 cards): Represent major life themes, lessons, and archetypal energies. These are the "big" cards.

Minor Arcana (56 cards): Represent day-to-day experiences. Divided into four suits:

  • Wands: Creativity, passion, action, fire element
  • Cups: Emotions, relationships, love, water element
  • Swords: Thoughts, communication, conflict, air element
  • Pentacles: Material world, money, health, earth element

Choosing Your First Deck

There are hundreds of tarot decks. For beginners, the Rider-Waite-Smith deck is recommended because:

  • Most educational resources reference it
  • The imagery clearly illustrates card meanings
  • It is widely available

But ultimately, choose a deck that visually resonates with you.

Before Reading

Cleanse Your Deck

New decks carry energy from production and handling. Cleanse yours by:

  • Smudging with sage
  • Leaving in moonlight during Full Moon
  • Knocking on the deck three times
  • Sleeping with it under your pillow

Set the Space

  • Find a quiet place
  • Light a candle or incense
  • Take deep breaths
  • Clear your mind

Ask a Good Question

Avoid yes/no questions. Instead ask:

  • "What do I need to know about...?"
  • "What lesson is this situation teaching me?"
  • "How can I improve...?"

How to Do a Reading

Step 1: Shuffle

Shuffle the cards while focusing on your question. There is no wrong way to shuffle.

Step 2: Draw Cards

When ready, stop shuffling. You can:

  • Cut the deck and take from the middle
  • Fan cards out and pick intuitively
  • Take cards from the top

Step 3: Interpret

Look at each card and ask:

  • What is my initial gut reaction?
  • What symbols stand out?
  • How does this relate to my question?
