Smudging Ceremony

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt the energy was "off"? Spaces absorb emotions - arguments, stress, sickness all leave energetic residue. Smudging is the ancient practice of clearing that energy so your home (and you) can feel light and peaceful again.

What Is Smudging?

Smudging is the practice of burning sacred herbs to cleanse and purify a space, object, or person. Indigenous cultures around the world have used smoke for spiritual cleansing for thousands of years.

The smoke attaches to negative energy and carries it away, leaving the space (or person) energetically clear and protected.

When to Smudge

  • Moving into a new home
  • After arguments or conflicts
  • When feeling stuck or blocked
  • After illness in the home
  • When experiencing bad luck
  • After guests leave
  • Before and after rituals
  • During Full or New Moon
  • When anxiety feels heavy in the air
  • When you just feel like the space needs it

Smudging Tools

White Sage

The most popular smudging herb. Native to North America and traditionally used by Indigenous peoples.

Best for: Deep cleansing, removing all energy (good and bad), protection

Note: Due to overharvesting, consider buying ethically sourced sage or growing your own.

Palo Santo

"Holy Wood" from South America. Has a sweet, uplifting scent.

Best for: Clearing negative energy while inviting positive energy, uplifting the mood, spiritual connection

Note: Ensure it is sustainably sourced (from naturally fallen trees).

Cedar

Protective and grounding with an earthy scent.

Best for: Protection, grounding, blessing a new home

Sweetgrass

Often used after sage to invite positive spirits.

Best for: Attracting positive energy, blessings, prayer

Lavender

Gentle and soothing cleansing.

Best for: Peace, relaxation, gentle cleansing, bedrooms

Rosemary

Common kitchen herb with powerful cleansing properties.

Best for: Protection, purification, memory, mental clarity

Incense

Various types available - frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh are traditional for cleansing.

Best for: Daily maintenance, specific intentions based on scent

How to Smudge Your Home

Preparation

  1. Open windows and doors (negative energy needs an exit)
  2. Gather: sage bundle (or your herb of choice), fireproof bowl or abalone shell, lighter
  3. Set your intention clearly
  4. Optional: play soft music or singing bowls

The Smudging Process

  1. Light the end of your sage bundle until it produces smoke (not flame)
  2. State your intention aloud: "I cleanse this space of all negative energy. Only love and light may remain."
  3. Start at your front door - this is the mouth of your home
  4. Move clockwise through each room (in the direction the sun moves)
  5. Use your hand or a feather to direct smoke into corners, behind doors, in closets
  6. Give extra attention to:
    • Corners (energy gets stuck there)
    • Doorways and windows
    • Mirrors
    • Places where conflict occurred
  7. As you go, repeat your intention or a chant
  8. End back at the front door
  9. Open the door and brush smoke out

After Smudging

  1. Extinguish your sage in sand or the fireproof bowl
  2. Close windows after about 30 minutes
  3. Light a sweet-smelling candle or incense to invite positive energy
  4. Optional: sprinkle salt at doorways for protection

How to Smudge Yourself

Your aura (energy field) can also collect negativity, especially if you are an empath.

  1. Light your smudge stick
  2. Starting at your feet, draw the smoke upward with your hand
  3. Move around your entire body - front, back, top of head
  4. Pay extra attention to your heart and head
  5. State: "I release all energy that is not mine. I release all negativity. I am cleansed and protected."
  6. Visualize the smoke carrying away darkness and leaving golden light

Smudging Objects

New crystals, jewelry, used furniture, tarot cards - anything that holds energy can be smudged.

  1. Light smudge stick
  2. Pass object through the smoke several times
  3. State your intention for the object
  4. Set down and let smoke dissipate

Alternatives to Smoke Smudging

If you cannot use smoke (allergies, apartments, etc.):

Sound: Ring a bell or singing bowl in each corner. Play 741 Hz frequency.

Salt: Sprinkle salt in corners, leave 24 hours, vacuum up.

Essential Oil Spray: Fill spray bottle with water, add drops of sage, lavender, or frankincense essential oil. Mist around the room.

Crystals: Place Black Tourmaline or Selenite in corners.

Visualization: Walk through your home visualizing white light cleansing each room.

Timing Your Smudging

Best times:

  • New Moon (new beginnings)
  • Full Moon (releasing)
  • Dawn or Dusk (liminal times)
  • When you feel the need

How often:

  • Weekly for maintenance
  • Immediately after negative events
  • Seasonally at minimum
